In the French part of the Eastern Pyrenees, a persistent drought has made a heavy impact on the region’s water resources. To secure a stable water supply, Eau Agglo Perpignan Méditerranée. responsible for local water management, replaces mechanical water meters with ultrasonic Kamstrup meters.
The Perpignan region has faced an unprecedented drought. At the local water management company, the lack of rainwater has posed a serious challenge for the region’s water supply. To ensure a stable and reliable water supply, they had to reassess the current metering situation, which was essential for securing a higher network efficiency rate. They were challenged with mechanical meters that lost accuracy and quality over time. Another critical point was water loss in the distribution network.
Compared to mechanical meters, ultrasonic meters with integrated communication ensure reliable measurement and long-term reliability. Therefore, Eau Agglo Perpignan Méditerranée found meter replacement pivotal and chose Kamstrup’s flowIQ® 2200 smart water meter as the ideal solution. With plans to invest in over 100,000 new meters, they needed to verify the quality. After extensive testing, the water management company confirmed the meters met all expectations. The integrated Acoustic Leakage Detection in flowIQ® 2200 was of vital importance.
In 2024, 40,000 households were equipped with Kamstrup flowIQ® 2200 meters. While 126,000 are still to be realised in 2025, Eau Agglo Perpignan Méditerranée has already made a significant leap forward in improving the network efficiency. The first benefit already achieved is identifying 120 leaks in a few months. Some were previously undetectable, making this a real advantage. They have already improved their leak detection success rate from 60% to over 75% with an even higher ambition achieve a network efficiency rate above 89%.
