With 6,200 cows, De Jong Family Farms in Indiana produced massive amounts of manure—around 100 million gallons of slurry annually. While it was stored in ponds and applied to land, the farm faced increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve sustainability, and maximize the value of this organic matter. Additionally, sand bedding, while beneficial for the cows, created significant wear and tear on equipment, making reliable pumping and mixing a challenge.
To optimize their new anaerobic digestion (AD) plant, the farm chose Landia’s GasMix digester mixing system and Chopper Pumps. The GasMix system effectively homogenizes manure, maximizing biogas production. Importantly, all components are accessible outside the tank, ensuring easy maintenance and avoiding safety risks like working at height. The robust Landia Chopper Pumps, designed to handle tough materials, reliably operated despite sand entering the system.
Rob Juhl, Project Manager, highlights the success:
“The Landia pumps are the most reliable we’ve had. We turn them on, and they do what they should do. With GasMix, we maximize gas production, and maintenance is straightforward.”
De Jong Family Farms has turned a significant challenge into a sustainable success story, proving that with the right equipment, manure can truly be green energy gold.
