Challenge

The case addresses several pressing issues faced by modern facilities: reliance on external district heating (particularly wood-based systems), high energy consumption, and the need for both thermal comfort and operational control. The facility needed an independent, reliable heating source that could simultaneously deliver comfort heating and hot tap water, as well as office air-conditioning. The solution had to ensure energy efficiency, allow for remote monitoring and control, and guarantee uninterrupted service even under low ambient temperatures or during defrost cycles. In essence, the goal was to replace outdated, climate-dependent infrastructure while meeting stringent comfort, efficiency, and sustainability targets—all without compromising uptime or control.

Solution

A plug-and-play air-to-water CO₂ heat pump unit that delivers both heating and cooling from a single system was installed. It features 600 kW heating capacity and 300 kW cooling, perfectly tailored for simultaneous needs. The system runs on CO₂ as a natural refrigerant (GWP = 1), aligning with F-gas compliance and providing a future-proof, eco-friendly alternative . The unit arrives factory-assembled, just connect water and electricity, and integrates seamlessly without the need for a machine room or multiple separate units. Built-in adaptive controls, fast defrosting using hot gas, and high-capacity operation even in low ambient temperatures ensure reliable performance—even during defrost cycles. It supports MODBUS communication for full remote monitoring and control. The CO₂ refrigerant ensures high energy efficiency, zero ozone depletion, non-flammability, and minimal climate impact. Finally, installation takes just around eight hours, dramatically minimizing downtime and installation complexity.

Result

The deployment enabled the facility to achieve complete independence from district heating systems—no boilers, no wood-based fuel. Comfort heating, hot tap water, and air-conditioning are now delivered with a single, integrated unit, drastically simplifying operations and reducing maintenance. Energy efficiency has significantly improved due to the high COP and adaptive controls of the CO₂ heat pump technology . The eco-credentials are strong: zero F-gas emissions, ozone-safe, GWP equal to one, non-toxic, and non-flammable . Installation in just 8 hours cut labor and commissioning time. Although specific numeric savings (e.g., % energy saved, payback time) aren’t provided, value is created across the board: operational reliability, reduced environmental impact, streamlined system footprint, and future-proof compliance with regulations. Stakeholders—from facilities management to sustainability officers—benefit from cost savings, enhanced control, and demonstrable climate action.
