To overcome these challenges, Rijeka Gateway implemented a comprehensive set of sustainable solutions.
From the beginning of construction, the terminal secured its electricity from renewable sources, primarily solar and wind, through a contract with ENNA Next. Most of the terminal’s equipment will be electrified and remotely operated, significantly reducing emissions. The terminal will also feature a highly efficient water management and drainage system to prevent marine pollution. Automated lighting systems will, in a future phase when regulations allow, ensure that inactive areas are not unnecessarily illuminated, helping to reduce light pollution. To limit noise, the introduction of shore power is planned within the next two years, reducing the need for ships to run their engines while at berth.
Additionally, cranes will use soft landing technology to minimise loading noise, and traditional beeping signals will be replaced with less intrusive white noise.
