Challenge

In the remote village of Chorriaca, located in Argentina’s Patagonian outback, residents previously depended on an outdated and inefficient diesel generator for electricity. This system provided inconsistent power, was operational only for limited periods, and produced substantial noise pollution. The lack of a dependable energy source hindered daily life, with electricity shortages arising from fuel scarcity.

In 2013, Viking Wind implemented a groundbreaking hybrid wind-diesel energy system in Chorriaca, marking a pivotal moment for the village. This system, featuring a total installed capacity of 195 kW—comprising three 25 kW wind turbines and a 120 kW diesel generator—operates under a hybrid generation control system. With an annual energy output of approximately 226,000 kWh, the system now provides uninterrupted electricity to the community, ensuring 24/7 access to power. This consistent energy supply is vital for sustaining the village’s agricultural activities, livestock farming, and communication with the outside world.

Solution

The hybrid wind-diesel system represents a cleaner, more reliable, cost-effective energy solution for Chorriaca. The system optimises efficiency while minimising environmental impact by prioritising wind energy production and utilising diesel as a supplementary source during peak demand.

This initiative forms part of the Argentina Patagonia Renewable Energy Projects, spearheaded by the Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership. The project underscores the commitment to renewable energy as a driver for sustainable development in remote and underserved regions.

Result

The impact of the hybrid wind-diesel system on Chorriaca’s residents has been profound. Households now benefit from the ability to cook, illuminate their homes, and operate small appliances throughout the day. The local healthcare station and the village’s Primary School Nº 97—serving 84 students—have access to electricity 24 hours a day, enabling better healthcare and education services.

By delivering a consistent and renewable energy supply to sparsely populated and remote areas, the project has significantly reduced dependency on fossil fuels. It demonstrates how sustainable energy solutions can enhance the quality of life and ensure the long-term survival of communities in challenging environments.

Two Viking Wind turbines and a battery for storage have become a vital source for the future survival of the small village

Conclusion
Viking Wind’s contribution to Chorriaca exemplifies the potential of renewable energy systems to transform rural communities. By providing cleaner and uninterrupted electricity, these innovative solutions pave the way for sustainable development, creating opportunities for agriculture, education, and healthcare while fostering connectivity in remote regions.

The hybrid wind-diesel system in Chorriaca highlights the importance of investing in renewable energy technologies to address global energy challenges, ensuring a brighter and more sustainable future for all.
