Challenge

The report addressed one of Denmark’s most pressing environmental challenges: achieving climate neutrality in the energy and transport sectors. These sectors are responsible for a significant share of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, and without targeted action, Denmark risks missing its long-term climate goals. The challenge includes reducing fossil fuel dependency, integrating renewable energy sources, and developing new technologies such as Power-to-X and carbon capture. Additionally, the case tackles the complexity of coordinating infrastructure, policy, and investment across sectors to ensure a just and economically viable green transition

Solution

The solution presented in Klimasvar 2045 is a comprehensive national strategy developed by IDA and Aalborg University to make Denmark climate neutral by 2045. It is not a single product or technology, but a coordinated plan involving the deployment of several concrete solutions. These include large-scale implementation of renewable energy sources like wind and solar, development of Power-to-X technologies to convert green electricity into fuels, and the use of carbon capture and utilization (CCU) to reduce emissions from hard-to-abate sectors. The strategy also proposes sector coupling—linking electricity, heating, transport, and industry—to optimize energy use and reduce waste. The plan is designed to be technically feasible and economically beneficial, and it is intended to guide political decision-making and infrastructure investments over the coming decades.

Result

Since Klimasvar 2045 is a strategic roadmap rather than a completed project, the results are primarily modeled projections rather than realized outcomes. However, the plan estimates significant long-term benefits:

  • CO₂ emissions can be reduced by up to 90% in the energy and transport sectors by 2045.
  • Fuel cost savings are expected due to the shift from fossil fuels to renewables and electrification.
  • Job creation is anticipated in green industries, especially in energy infrastructure, Power-to-X, and carbon capture.
  • Sector integration will lead to improved energy efficiency across electricity, heating, and transport.
  • The plan also outlines economic viability, with investments expected to pay off through reduced energy imports and increased technological competitiveness.

Value is created for:

  • Citizens, through cleaner air and stable energy prices.
  • Industry, via new business opportunities and innovation.
  • Government, by aligning climate goals with economic growth and energy security.
