Challenge

The Villa Albertini water district in the province of Naples was facing persistent challenges related to water distribution. Excessive and unstable water pressure led to frequent pipeline failures and high water losses, placing strain on the system’s reliability and the utility’s operational capacity. Energy consumption was also disproportionately high, as the network relied on outdated infrastructure to sustain distribution across varying demands. These inefficiencies translated into elevated operational costs and made it difficult to meet environmental sustainability targets. For end users, the inconsistency in water pressure affected service reliability, further underscoring the need for a more adaptive and efficient approach to water management.

Solution

To address these issues, a digital pressure regulation solution, Grundfos Demand Driven Distribution (DDD), was implemented across the district. This system continuously adjusts water pressure in real time, based on actual demand in the network. By integrating advanced pressure controllers, IoT sensors, and a SCADA platform, the solution enables continuous monitoring and control of water flows. Predictive algorithms further support proactive adjustments and failure prevention. This digital setup ensures that water is delivered at optimal pressure levels throughout the network, reducing strain on the infrastructure and improving overall system performance.

Grundfos demand driven distribution (DDD)

Grundfos demand driven distribution (DDD) is a digital pressure regulation solution, which adjusts water pressure in real time, based on actual demand in the network.

Result

Following the implementation of the Grundfos DDD technology, the Villa Albertini district saw measurable improvements. Water volume injected into the network was reduced by 30.5%, easing pressure on water resources. At the same time, pipeline failures dropped by 51.3%, significantly lowering maintenance costs and improving service continuity. Energy efficiency increased by 43.9%, reflecting both environmental gains and financial savings for the utility. Residents benefited from more stable water pressure, which enhanced the reliability of service delivery.
