Challenge

Europe, including the UK, face a dual challenge of securing affordable, reliable energy while cutting emissions at speed.

Fossil fuel volatility and geopolitical shocks highlight the risks of dependency on imports, while extreme weather events put pressure on energy systems. At the same time, some recent criticism of offshore wind has been disproportionate when compared with what the sector is already delivering and the scale of projects in the pipeline.

Offshore wind is generating a significant share of UK electricity today, and with projects like Hornsea 3 and many more in development, the industry is set to expand its contribution even further. The challenge is to recognise and unlock this potential so offshore wind can keep stabilising prices, reducing imports, and driving decarbonisation.

Solution

Offshore wind has matured into a proven, large-scale solution that is already part of the UK’s energy backbone. Among Ørsted’s more than 30 offshore wind farms globally with a total capacity of over 10 GW, 12 of them are based in the UK, with a combined capacity of 5.6 GW.

This is home-grown electricity that reduces the UK’s reliance on imported fuels and strengthens resilience. Delivery is backed by robust operations, modern O&M ports, and a nationwide supply chain supporting tens of thousands of skilled jobs.

With Hornsea 3 set to add another 2.9 GW by 2027, offshore wind continues to prove that it is not a distant prospect but a technology delivering now and scaling for tomorrow.

Ørsted - a global leader in wind energy

Ørsted is a global leader in developing, constructing, and operating offshore wind farms. Ørsted is recognised on the CDP Climate Change A List as a global leader on climate action and was the first energy company in the world to have its science-based net-zero emissions target validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The Ørsted vision is a world that runs entirely on green energy.

Result

Offshore wind supplied around 17 percent of UK electricity in 2024, making it the country’s largest clean source and second only to gas. Ørsted’s 12 offshore wind farms alone deliver 7 percent of UK electricity, equal to 6 million UK households.

More than 30,000 people are employed in the UK offshore wind industry today, with employment projected to reach about 100,000 by 2030. By cutting fossil fuel imports and anchoring a growing domestic industry, offshore wind strengthens energy independence, supports economic resilience, and underpins the UK’s climate goals.
