Challenge

During biogas production, upgrading the raw gas removes CO₂ to create biomethane, but in most facilities, this CO₂ is released directly into the air. Not only does this waste a potentially valuable by‑product, it undermines climate goals by adding to greenhouse gas emissions. For operators, this also means lost commercial opportunities and untapped process heat recovery. The challenge was to integrate a reliable, low‑energy system that could capture, purify, and store CO₂ in a market‑ready form, while fitting seamlessly into existing biogas plant operations.

Solution

At the Bright Renewables facility, a dedicated CO₂ recovery line was added to the biogas upgrading system, using Advansor’s CuBig refrigeration unit to chill and liquefy the gas. The setup delivers 15 kW MT @ –5 °C and 105 kW LT @ –35 °C, with integrated heat recovery feeding back into plant processes. The captured CO₂ is purified to food‑grade standard and stored as liquid bio‑CO₂, ready for supply to industries like beverage production, greenhouses, and refrigeration. Emergency cooling capacity ensures operational stability, making it a dependable, real‑world solution rather than a lab‑scale concept.

Advansor - Bright Renewables Carbon Capture installation

Result

The installation prevents around 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually by avoiding venting. It adds a new revenue stream from bio‑CO₂ sales, improving plant economics while strengthening the sustainability profile. Heat recovery reduces the site’s own energy demand, cutting operational costs. The value is shared across the chain — the operator benefits financially, customers gain a green CO₂ source, and the wider community sees climate benefits through avoided emissions and more efficient resource use.
