Challenge

As global efforts to combat climate change intensify, innovative solutions for reducing CO₂ emissions are essential. One of the most promising approaches is capturing and storing CO2. In Denmark, Bigadan is pioneering a project which captures CO₂ and turns it into a valuable asset for the climate.

However, Denmark’s value chain for capturing and storing CO2 is still in its early stages, with limited storage capacity, evolving technical and regulatory frameworks, and an immature market for CDR credits. Despite these challenges, Bigadan is stepping up to fill the gaps, taking on significant risk to lay the foundations for a scalable, impactful solution.

Solution

Bigadan is building a state-of-the-art CO₂ capture and liquefaction facility in Kalundborg, designed to capture biogenic CO₂ from biogas production and prepare it for permanent geological storage. The CO₂ is transported to Esbjerg and injected into the Greensand Future project, located in the North Sea and operated by INEOS. By capturing biogenic CO₂, the project ensures emissions are permanently removed from the atmosphere, contributing to global climate goals.

The project lays the groundwork for future markets, such as e-fuels for transport, and establishes a scalable business model for carbon removal, creating measurable value across sectors.

Bigadan’s CO₂ capture and storage project in Kalundborg is made possible in part by support from the NECCS fund, managed by the Danish Energy Agency.

Bigadan is a well-established group in the Danish biogas sector with broad experience in waste-to-energy solutions. Leveraging this existing infrastructure and operational expertise, the project integrates a dual-line CO₂ capture and liquefaction plant supplied by Kanadevia Inova BioMethan GmbH. The system captures CO₂ from biogas upgrading, purifies it through compression before drying and liquefying the CO2 using a natural refrigerant with a liquefaction efficiency of up to 94% and CO₂ purity of 99.9%.

Result

Kalundborg Bioenergy´s CO₂ capture and liquefaction facility is a vital step in advancing large-scale carbon capture and storage. By permanently storing 25,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year, from 2026 until 2032, the project will prevent the release of 175,000 tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere over the project period.

The stored CO₂ generates high-quality CDR credits, enabling companies to address unavoidable residual emissions and support net-zero strategies, SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative) commitments, and CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) reporting. This not only provides a solution for businesses to reach their net-zero goals but also contributes to long-term climate action.

For Bigadan, the solution creates a new long-term business model centered on carbon removal, while strengthening the utilisation and climate performance of biogas production.

As the CCUS value chain continues to mature, Bigadan’s efforts will play a critical role in building the technical, commercial, and regulatory foundations necessary for scaling up carbon removal solutions across Europe
