India has set a target for reaching net-zero emissions by 2070, while the country’s power demand is estimated to more than double by 2042 compared to today.
Renewable energy will play a vital role in meeting the future power demand while staying on track for the net zero target. Offshore wind can be a new source of energy, and the Government of India foresees a potential of 37 GW.
The Indian-Danish collaboration on offshore wind has contributed with technical knowledge and know-how from Denmark’s more than 30 years of experience with offshore wind.
The Danish knowledge sharing with relevant Indian authorities has contributed to informing the development of the country’s first Strategy for Establishment of Offshore Wind Projects in 2023, which again led to the preparation of the first 4 GW offshore wind tender launched in 2024.
Through the joint Centre of Excellence on Offshore Wind and Renewable Energy established in 2021, Danish experts have supported relevant partners in India on the development of a transparent regulatory framework for offshore wind. This includes the preparation of tender documents and assistance in mapping potential areas for offshore wind build-out with consideration of possible environmental and social de-risking by assessing the port readiness in the states of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.
These kinds of activities are based on de-risking the entire value chain, simplifying the processes for potential investors and creating transparency and open dialogue between public authorities and the private sector.
