Challenge

In the coastal area of Kristianssand in Norway the Dalane-Langemyr valley stretches for three kilometres. The current image of Dalane-Langemyr needed to be reimagined. The place lacked identity and did not reflect the ambition for sustainability that Kristiansand aspired to.

The challenge was to envision the way Dalane-Langemyr could become a climate positive hot spot for technology, logistics and transport while making the area a natural place for restitution for its different users. Being placed in a valley harvesting the bountiful natural and renewable energy ressources was a must in order for Dalane-Langemyr to meet its sustainability goals.

Solution

Through a creative process, we developed a visual vision for Dalane-Langemyr. Taking a holistic approach, we analyzed the area and explored its potential across scales, urban context, spaces, target groups, and behaviors to map out new opportunities. This resulted in a dynamic program for a future hub for zero-emission transport and innovative technologies.

Dalane-Langemyr already had freight terminals, bus stops, and an incineration plant. However, there was an ambition to create a model for sustainable development powered by solar and wind energy. Additionally, the site needed to generate added value, so we proposed inviting the local workforce in by offering accommodation, dining options, and spaces for courses and conferences.

Result

“To understand the area, it became necessary to work with a 3D model, allowing us to concretize our visions and visualize our concept for a future transport hub.”– Mads Peder Müller, architect at JUUL FROST Architects

To bring the grand visions to life and illustrate the potential future developments, Midjourney became a valuable creative partner, providing the area with a digital makeover and visualizing its possibilities.
