Challenge

Ireland continues to face the dual challenge of reducing its dependence on fossil fuels while ensuring a stable and secure electricity supply. As solar energy becomes the fastest-growing renewable technology globally, Ireland is looking to diversify its energy mix to meet ambitious climate and energy targets. The country’s Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS) provides a mechanism to accelerate deployment, yet achieving scale and reliability requires the involvement of experienced energy developers and long-term investments.

Solution

Ørsted has broken ground on its first Irish solar farm, Garreenleen Phase 1, located approximately 15 kilometres from Carlow town. This 81 MW solar project is designed to deliver renewable electricity during daylight hours, contributing to a more balanced and resilient power system. Once completed, it is expected to generate enough green electricity to supply the annual energy needs of around 29,000 homes.

The project was awarded a contract under RESS 3 in September 2023, securing its route to market. Commissioning is anticipated in 2026, at which point the Garreenleen Phase 1 solar farm will bring Ørsted’s total operational capacity on the island of Ireland to nearly 500 MW. As part of the current construction phase, grid infrastructure is also being installed to accommodate the upcoming Garreenleen Phase 2, a separate 82 MW project that is targeting participation in future onshore renewable auctions. By incorporating the electrical groundwork for both phases from the outset, Ørsted is ensuring efficient scalability of the site and alignment with future energy demand.

Result

Garreenleen represents a significant milestone for Ørsted in Ireland, marking its first solar project to reach the construction phase on the island. The project supports national renewable energy ambitions while contributing to the decarbonisation of the Irish power system.

With the necessary policy frameworks in place, developments like Garreenleen will play an essential role in helping Ireland meet its long-term renewable electricity targets. The project underscores Ørsted’s commitment to being a long-term energy partner for Ireland, delivering both climate impact and infrastructure development in support of the country’s green energy transition.
