Ørsted has broken ground on its first Irish solar farm, Garreenleen Phase 1, located approximately 15 kilometres from Carlow town. This 81 MW solar project is designed to deliver renewable electricity during daylight hours, contributing to a more balanced and resilient power system. Once completed, it is expected to generate enough green electricity to supply the annual energy needs of around 29,000 homes.
The project was awarded a contract under RESS 3 in September 2023, securing its route to market. Commissioning is anticipated in 2026, at which point the Garreenleen Phase 1 solar farm will bring Ørsted’s total operational capacity on the island of Ireland to nearly 500 MW. As part of the current construction phase, grid infrastructure is also being installed to accommodate the upcoming Garreenleen Phase 2, a separate 82 MW project that is targeting participation in future onshore renewable auctions. By incorporating the electrical groundwork for both phases from the outset, Ørsted is ensuring efficient scalability of the site and alignment with future energy demand.
