Challenge

Energy-intensive industries and long-distance transportation account for approximately 30% of global carbon emissions (WEF), and in cases where direct electrification is not possible, green hydrogen and derivatives such as e-ammonia and e-methanol will be an essential solution in decarbonising these sectors.

Despite its necessity, scaling the technologies necessary to create this solution still faces challenges.

To decarbonise industry and reduce carbon emissions, we need the technologies required to be ready and at scale, and we need them now.

Solution

To create the SOEC electrolysis technology critical for efficient green hydrogen production at the levels needed to meet net zero, Topsoe has built an industrial-scale manufacturing facility in Herning, Denmark.

The 23,000 sqm facility employs over 200 people and has an initial capacity of 500 MW, but has the capacity to scale further.

The factory in Herning will be a strong contributor to achieving European and global climate targets.

Result

The factory is creating SOEC stacks to be used for e-ammonia and e-methanol projects, facilitating the decarbonization of energy-intensive chemical production.

The factory is initially designed to manufacture 500 MW of electrolysers each year. When fully loaded, after ten years the factory can service up to 10 GW installed capacity at customer sites, enabling the reduction of 15 million metric tons of CO2 annually, compared to hydrogen produced from natural gas. This is equivalent to the annual emissions of nearly 3.5 million gasoline-powered passenger vehicles.
