Challenge

The expansion of offshore wind is essential for achieving global climate targets, but integrating large amounts of offshore-generated electricity into onshore grids presents a challenge. Traditional grid connections can limit the efficiency of offshore wind farms, and energy storage solutions are needed to balance supply and demand.

Offshore energy hubs, or energy islands, offer a solution by acting as hubs that collect, store and distribute offshore wind power to multiple markets, including direct grid connections and green hydrogen production. However, developing offshore energy hubs requires expertise in large-scale infrastructure, financing and cross-border energy integration.

Solution

To drive the development of offshore energy hubs, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has launched Copenhagen Energy Islands (CEI) —a dedicated company focused on planning, financing and delivering these offshore hubs worldwide.

CEI will leverage CIP’s expertise in offshore wind, power-to-X and energy infrastructure to develop offshore energy hubs that optimise offshore wind generation, enable grid flexibility and support large-scale hydrogen production. The company will work closely with governments, utilities, and investors to facilitate energy island projects from concept to operation.

Result

Offshore energy hubs are expected to play a key role in global energy systems, improving offshore wind integration, increasing energy security and enabling cross-border renewable energy trade.

With the launch of CEI, CIP provides a specialised platform to accelerate the development of offshore energy hubs and support the transition to a renewable, interconnected energy system.
