Challenge

For the moment, oil shale covers around 70% of Estonia’s energy demand and ensures its energy security. By providing the local electricity grid with a steady flow of environmentally produced energy, the wind farm constitutes a clean supplement to the effort of reinforcing energy security.

The wind farm also plays a role in addressing fluctuations in electricity prices to the benefit of Estonian consumers.

Solution

The wind farm, which began construction in 2022 and opened in 2023, is the first ever opened by Utilitas. The generators of Vestas V150 type wind turbines each have a capacity of 3.4 MW, the total capacity of the wind farm being 39 MW.

Local partner: Utilitas

Utilitas is a utility and energy company located in Tallinn, Estonia. Utilitas supplies heat to eight Estonian cities. The company operates about 550 kilometres (340 mi) of district heating networks while also operating power plants, solar plants and wind farms. At the time of writing, Utilitas only operates one wind farm in Estonia but is currently developing three others – two onshore and one offshore.

Result

With an estimated annual production 135 GWh, the Danish-supplied wind turbines in Saarde Parish are able to produce enough energy to cover the annual electricity consumption of 40.000 Estonian households. The establishment of the wind farm also opens the door for further investments in the Estonian wind energy sector. In addition to the described project, the construction of two wind farms in Estonia’s Easternmost and oil shale-heavy county, Ida-Viru County, using Vestas-supplied wind turbines is currently ongoing.
