The Nesodden ferries, serving approximately 2.8 million passengers annually, were originally powered by gas engines. The challenge was to retrofit these vessels to meet Oslo’s goal of becoming emission-free by 2030, ensuring reliable service without downtime.
In 2019, SEAM collaborated with Danfoss to convert the three Nesodden ferries to electric propulsion. The retrofit involved installing 2,020 kWh batteries and utilizing Danfoss’s VACON NXP Liquid Cooled drives for propulsion. A 3.8 MW onshore charging station was also established to facilitate rapid charging between trips.
The electrification led to a reduction of 6,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually. The ferries now operate exclusively on electric power, offering quieter and cleaner transportation across the Oslo Fjord. The success of this project positions Oslo as a leader in sustainable maritime transport.
SEAM AS is a world-leading supplier of zero-emission solutions to the maritime industry. Their goal is to develop and deliver the most effective power and automation solutions that will enable and secure a clean energy transition.
