Stockholm Municipality is a pioneer in a very important shift from conventional deicing and dust suppression products to the eco-labeled product – CMA / ICE & DUST-AWAY.
One of the “manmade” environmental challenges for Stockholm is the wide use of winter studded tires, which is allowed between October 1st and April 15th, when the share of studded tires increases to 75%.
According to the EU directive (1999/30/EG), the daily averages of PM10 should not exceed 50 µg/m3 for more than 35 days during each year. Long-term measurements have shown high levels of PM10 in Stockholm City and along busy roads and highways in Sweden during winter- and springtime: the monthly averages in Stockholm has been observed to be above 80 µg/m3 for March and April during 1999–2004 and daily averages extending above 200 µg/m3 for several days during each year.
Already in 2004 this Municipality has started elaborating own methodology, looking for measures to reduce Particulate Air Pollution, and, after testing about 10 different measures, products and techniques, they have found the one, which was contributing in the most optimal way to reduction of PM 10 in the city center and on several streets with heavy traffic – application of eco-labeled product from Alumichem A/S - CMA / ICE & DUST-AWAY.
This product has been continuously used during winter seasons approximately on 35 streets since 2013-14 and according to regular measuring of PM10 it can be stated, that application of calcium magnesium acetate (CMA, ICE & DUST-AWAY as 25% water solution) on the road surface of a highway during dry conditions resulted in an average reduction of around 35% in the daily PM10 averages.
Other measures, like intense sweeping or washing of the pavements, resulted in marginal reductions (< 10%) and has proven no important influence on the PM10.
Application of CMA / ICE & DUST-AWAY on the roads in Stockholm has surely also contributed to cleaner and safer streets, as the product is known for its excellent de-icing properties, and, what’s even more important – to protection of plants and trees and better water quality in the lakes and springs in the city center. The product is fully and easily biodegradable and has no hazardous effects on groundwater or greenery.
