Challenge

European Energy’s Mokoan Solar Park stands as the company’s first commissioned project in Australia—an achievement reached in a rapidly evolving and highly competitive market. The project entered a landscape where the government aims to deliver an additional 33,000 GWh of renewable electricity between 2020 and 2030, and where European Energy itself is advancing a development pipeline exceeding 9 GW.

Yet Mokoan was far from a simple site. The Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) team had to navigate an unusually dense set of constraints: a major gas pipeline running through the middle of the project area, three separate fibre channels, a primary railway line, and the busy Hume Highway.

“It was described as the perfect model site because if our EPC team could navigate all of those constraints, then they can do anything.”

– Catriona McLeod, Vice President, Regional Manager, European Energy Australia

Solution

To meet these challenges, European Energy deployed a combination of strong partnerships, technical expertise, and responsible development practices. Collaboration with First Nations communities ensured culturally respectful project delivery and created a foundation for long-term local relationships. Securing a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Amazon provided commercial certainty and strengthened the project’s long-term viability.

On site, the project employed bifacial solar panels to optimise energy yield and relied on the company’s skilled in-house EPC team, whose experience was instrumental in designing around the site’s many infrastructure constraints. European Energy further strengthened its environmental commitments by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the conservation organisation Odonata to explore biodiversity enhancements at Mokoan and future project sites across Australia.

Result

Mokoan Solar Park completed construction in November 2024, less than a year after Financial Investment Decision, and achieved grid connection in February 2025, both ahead of schedule and under budget. The project has contributed more than AUD 95 million to local, regional, and national suppliers, created over 150 jobs during construction, and now supports eight full-time operational roles.

Across its lifetime, Mokoan will channel more than AUD 400,000 to community partnerships supporting local organisations, the Yorta Yorta people, and regional businesses. The solar park produces clean electricity equivalent to powering more than 18,000 Victorian homes and abates over 85,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year.

Together, these achievements mark an important milestone in European Energy’s growing Australian presence.

“We are proud to support Victoria’s clean energy goals while working closely with local communities and Traditional Owners. Mokoan Solar Park is just the beginning of our journey in Australia, where we see great potential to deliver reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy at scale.”
