Thyborøn, a small port town on Denmark’s windy west coast, has a long tradition of community-owned wind turbines. Building on this legacy, a local wind turbine co-operative partnered with Vestas to install the V236-15.0 MW commercial test turbine. The project was financed by local investors and supported by the municipality, which facilitated a quick and efficient permitting process.
Active engagement with residents—including citizen meetings and ongoing communication—helped build trust and ensure strong public backing. This approach allowed the turbine to be installed in record time, with no official objections during the permitting phase.
Positioned on the harbour front, close to the sea, the turbine provides easy access for test operations while contributing valuable data for Vestas’ offshore wind technology.
