With more than 20 research units, 25 engineering study programmes and 3500 students, The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark boasts both research and education at the highest international level.

The Faculty of Engineering is located in the cities of Odense and Sønderborg, and the Faculty cooperates closely with the surrounding society. The cooperation is based on constructive dialogue and a constant mutual search for new opportunities to strengthen and develop growth, wealth and welfare. Researchers and students engage in national and global research and development projects with companies and other research institutions.

Priority research areas

The Faculty excels within a great number of research areas and leads several projects of highest international level, among others

  • Resource and energy efficient supply chain
  • Strategic use of energy resources
  • Innovative system modelling of Energy Return on Investment
  • Energy efficient materials for wind-turbines and unmanned aerial systems
  • Sustainable building and building large structures in wood
  • Energy system analysis and design with a focus on system integration and cross sectorial synergy
  • Process development and intensification within fuel and biofuel production
  • Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Energy Storage
  • Organic energy efficient generating and consuming technology
  • Development of next generation plasmonic components for energy efficient IT and others
  • Educational and business aspects of energy technology- Advanced control of energy systems
  • Development of new reliable and efficient electronic components and devices.

Four strong departments

Through its research, innovation and study programmes, the Faculty contributes with solutions to global social and environmental problems. The research areas are anchored in four departments.

The Department of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Technology
The department covers research within e.g. chemical process engineering, functional materials and fuel cells, biomass technology, system analysis and environmentally efficient technology. Find more information here.

Current research and innovation activities include among others a broad selection of Robotics, Embodied Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Neurorobotics, Drone Technology, Power Electronics and Energy Informatics.Find more information here.

Research competencies cover topics from nanotechnology, mechatronics and electronics, upscaling of solar cells and other smart devices to innovation and entrepreneurship. The Mads Clausen Institute is placed in Sønderborg. Find more information here.
