In a future where energy comes from renewable energy sources, we need to be able to control the electricity consumption, taking into account the fluctuating electricity production. Here, it is an advantage that consumers can actively turn down their electricity consumption or move it to periods when more electricity is produced.

Remote controlling of heat pumps and electric radiators
The EcoGrid 2.0 project is one of the world’s largest smart energy projects, and it is demonstrating a market for flexible electricity consumption in private homes. The project remotely controls 1,000 heat pumps and electric radiators in private households on the Danish island of Bornholm, so the electricity consumption of the appliances is optimally utilized in the power system. Among other things, the project examines what electricity consumers should be offered to hand over control of their power consumption, and when the comfort limits are reached.

Insero’s role
As a partner in the project, Insero develops the platform that bridges the gap between the households and the power system. The purpose is to be able to ‘pool’ flexible electricity consumption from many households and sell it on the electricity market.

In addition, we are overall responsible for ensuring the development of end-customer products, which make it possible to have control over the flexibility from the heat pumps, while also making it attractive for end-users to hand over control of their consumption.

Facts about the project
  • Budget: DKK 98 million with support from the Danish Energy Agency’s Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Programme (EUDP) for DKK 49 million
  • Project period: 2016-2019
  • Partners: Danish Energy Association, Technical University of Denmark, Bornholms Energi & Forsyning, IBM, Insero, Uptime-IT, Krukow, CBS and 2+1
