Challenge

Using biogenic CO₂ for food and industrial applications requires extremely high and consistent purity, along with full compliance with strict food safety and quality standards. To meet these specifications, CO₂ from biogas production, a variable and complex raw gas stream, must be cleaned, dried, and upgraded.

In a market where fossil CO₂ has historically been cheaper and more readily available, establishing a completely new solution from scratch was a huge challenge. Both technically and economically. The key issue was to design, permit, and operate a reliable, industrial-scale solution capable of delivering stable, high-quality CO2. At the same time, it needed to ensure economic viability while fully integrated into live biogas process.

Solution

In partnership with Nippon Gases, Bigadan implemented carbon capture and utilisation at Horsens Bioenergi. Here the biogenic CO₂ is used to replace fossil CO₂ in existing markets. Instead of sourcing new fossil CO₂, Nippon Gases distributes biogenic CO₂ from the facility as a high-purity product for applications such as food transport cooling, including REMA 1000 trucks, and greenhouse cultivation.

The solution connects the upgrading, logistics, and end-use of CO2 into one operational value chain. It demonstrates how biogenic CO₂ can be integrated directly into existing industrial supply chains, establishing a concrete and scalable carbon capture and utilisation model under real market conditions.

Result

Bigadan’s innovative project turns biogenic CO₂ from a low-value by-product into a high-value, marketable resource. Capturing and upgrading more than 18,000 tonnes of CO₂ in the coming years. By upgrading CO₂ to food- and industrial-grade quality, Bigadan enables direct substitution of fossil-based CO₂ thereby reducing dependence on fossil sources.

This creates value for multiple stakeholders: customers gain access to a more climate-efficient CO₂ supply without changing their processes, while Bigadan establishes a new commercial revenue stream based on circular carbon use.

This not only strengthens security of supply, but also shortens supply chains, demonstrating carbon capture’s feasibility
