Very ambitious national climate ambitions, existing vulnerable hydro-dominated electricity generation combined with very complex land rights has been the driver for Colombia to explore the country’s potential for offshore wind. Luckily, for Colombia, the potential is world class.
Work towards the first offshore wind project in Colombia and possibly Latin America. The identified project can potentially supply around half the electricity of the Caribbean region Atlántico, including Colombia’s fourth biggest city, Barranquilla, with 2.4 million habitants. In addition to supplying clean, green energy to the region, the project potentially substitutes a large number of existing old gas plants, presently generating heavy pollution.

With the Embassy in Colombia in an important facilitating role, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and the Mayor of Barranquilla signed in January 2022 an MoU regarding the first offshore wind project in Colombia outside Barranquilla. Project size around 400 MW.
