Unlocking the potential of wastewater in Texas

Wastewater is far from a waste. In fact, if it is treated correctly, it is a huge resource. If wastewater treatment plants utilise the right technologies they can become energy neutral and even sell surplus energy back to the grid. Adding to this, plants are able to reuse the organic content in wastewater to produce energy and phosphorus can be used for fertilizer production, rather than disposing it in the declining number of landfills across Texas. Denmark has managed to reduce its water sector’s share of electricity consumption to a mere 1.9%. Many of the solutions and technologies which have enabled this, are ready to be implemented in Texas too.
