In the research programme ForskEL's projects on biomass - as for example straw and waste from households and industry – research is undertaken into combustion and gasification of biomass and waste and the handling of biomass resources. A new focus area is the integrated planning of electricity and heat generation with biofuel production for the transport sector based on biomass and waste.

Within research and development in biomass and waste, most projects have related to the construction of new types of power stations and the introduction of biomass use at existing power stations. The research and development projects have actively supported the implementation of the Danish biomass action plan from 1993, according to which 1.2m tonnes of biomass (straw and wood chips) are to be converted into electricity and heat.

Research is being undertaken into the development of facilities to handle the process of combustion and gasification of biomass and waste in the most optimal way, and that requires new technologies.
