The SHP Albrechtice hydropower plant, operating since before WWII, was designed for optimal efficiency only during the three months of steady water levels each year. Its 80-year-old gears began to fail, and the fixed-speed system couldn’t adapt to variable water flows. This resulted in inefficient year-round power generation and increased maintenance needs, making modernisation urgent for reliability, cost-effectiveness, and maximising energy potential throughout the year.
Instead of replacing aging gears, Danfoss, in partnership with Q-ELEKTRIK, implemented a retrofit using VACON® NXC low harmonic drives and a synchronous generator with permanent magnets. This enabled variable speed operation, adapting turbine performance to real-time water flow. The system also includes regenerative braking and lifecycle services such as DrivePro® Start-up and Preventive Maintenance, which improved efficiency, minimized disruptions, and extended equipment lifespan without a full system overhaul.
Q – ELEKTRIK a.s. is a Czech company specializing in the sale and distribution of electrical installation materials, climate control systems, and non-ferrous metals. Established in 2002 and headquartered in Ostrava, the company offers a wide range of products including electrical components, LG air conditioning systems, and industrial equipment. With branches in Modřice, Hostivař, and Bytča (Slovakia), Q – ELEKTRIK provides comprehensive services to clients across the Czech Republic and Slovakia, emphasizing quality and customer satisfaction
Within the first year of operation, energy production rose by 10% due to the flexible speed control. The plant reduced maintenance costs, minimised downtime, and achieved a more resilient, future-proof energy generation setup. This plant now operates efficiently year-round, rather than just during peak water flow months. The combination of Danfoss drives and lifecycle services created long-term value through lower operating costs and a more stable, sustainable electricity supply for the surrounding area. The successful retrofit also sets a precedent for upgrading other ageing hydropower facilities with minimal investment and maximum impact.
