Fuel efficiency is the key driver in Clipper’s sustainability efforts
The vessel performance monitoring system, COACH, was developed in 2011 at the Danish shipping company Clipper Group. The main purpose of COACH is to improve energy efficiency and overall vessel performance while simultaneously focusing on environmental sustainability.
COACH provides the ship operator with voyage monitoring and analysis during and upon completion of the voyage. It assists operations and technical departments by analyzing the hull, propeller and engine efficiencies. Ultimately, COACH can contribute to optimizing the fleet portfolio by identifying fuel efficient designs and over-consuming vessels. Since 2014, the COACH solution has been available externally as well, and today more than 250 ships are using COACH to optimize energy consumption and monitor vessel performance.
With COACH the results speak for themselves. For example when COACH identified a significant fuel consumption increase on a vessel caused by hull fouling. In this particular case, the vessel was sent to early dry-dock, resulting in a 15-20% reduction in fuel consumption.
