Building better infrastructure and intelligent communication technologies can increase energy efficiency in the transport sector.

Congestion increases costs and emissions

Investments in sustainable transportat has to be planned over the long term. Decisions taken over the next few years will define the landscape for decades. Congestion costs Europe 1 % of its GDP, so investments that make better use of the infrastructure, create less congestion and ensure a better traffic flow will all contribute to reduce CO2-emissions from transport.

Giving the right signal

Navigation devices can make car journeys shorter. In a study for TomTom, researchers found distance savings per journey of 6-16% kilometers and time savings of 11-18%.A car uses more fuelin congestion with many stops and starts than it does at more even travelling speeds. Optimising traffic signals can improve the traffic flow and reduce emissions. In freight transport, intelligent communication systems are used for optimising route planning and increasing the load capacity in trucks. 

Denmark invests in infrastructure 

Together with Germany, Denmark is planning a 17 km tunnel under the Femern Belt between the two countries. The link will shorten traveling time between Scandinavia and Central Europe and strengthen the railway system. The fixed link, without ferries, reduces the annual CO2-emissions with up to 200.00 tonnes.

Denmark has also started a trial period with intelligent use of the emergency lanes on part of the highways in rush hour. Furthermore, Denmark has invested in new intelligent railway signals, which will reduce delays, increase the travelling speed and improve information and liability.
