Denmark’s green laboratory
In Thisted Municipality we consider our region a laboratory or test site, where renewable energy solutions are tested in new ways and in new constellations and then realised.
Development and production of renewable energy has been at the top of the agenda in Thisted Municipality for more than three decades. This has lead to Thisted being Denmark’s leading climate municipality. Thisted Municipality is more than self-sufficient in terms of power, and 85% of the district heating is based on renewable energy.
Thisted Municipality is very open towards new technologies that can work together in new constellations, we like to collaborate with various players, and involve research institutions. This creates a good basis for business in the municipality and attracts new partners.
The open approach has virtually transformed the municipality into a living laboratory. Among other things, Thisted has test centres for wind and wave energy, and development in the fields of biogas and solar energy is also performed.
In order to realize all these projects, Thisted municipality has worked with citizens, educational institutions, and businesses for decades. Hence, we have created many unique solutions with great future prospects. This work will persist and innovative solutions will also continue to be implemented in the municipality.
The Energy Point Frøstrup demonstration house was inaugurated on February 21, 2015 by Mayor Lene Kjelgaard, declaring it ready to demonstrate new renewable energy technology to private households. Based on several requests from the National Association of Engineers, the local association, IDA Mors-Thy, organized a guided Energy Tour of Thy for members in North Jutland. The seats were quickly sold out, so an extra tour was arranged.
On September 19th 2015, Hanstholm District Heating Plant fired up their new wood chip fired boiler which will replace the use of bio-fuel. Heating is now primarily produced from wood chips, from industrial surplus heat from the fishmeal industry, and from an electric boiler powered by wind turbines. Only during peak times the natural gas […]
Yet another test center for renewable energy has set a milestone in Denmark’s leading climate municipality. DanWEC in Thisted Municipality offers wave data to developers of wave energy converters. DanWEC (Danish Wave Energy Center) in Thisted Municipality is now one step closer to the vision of creating a complete development- and knowledge environment where the development […]
In Thisted Municipality we have two national Test Centers and development is also taking place within biogas and solar energy. Large Wind Turbines In 2012 the National Test Center for Large Wind Turbines, Oesterild, was opened. It has a capacity of 7 test benches for wind turbines with a height up to 250m. Wave Energy […]
In Thisted we believe that action speaks louder than words and that is why we try to lead the way and realize projects, rather than just making plans for them. Existing buildings The municipality owns and administrates buildings with a total area of approximately 300,000 m2. This includes schools, daycare centers, nursing homes etc. In […]
