By Karin Groendijk, Group Communications Manager, Grontmij N.V. , August 06, 2015

De Bilt - Grontmij, a listed consulting & engineering company with a strong European presence, has been appointed by Helsingør Utilities to convert the Helsingør combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Denmark from natural gas to biomass. With the construction of a new boiler-unit and the redevelopment of existing facilities, Helsingør Utilities aims to lower CO2 emissions, in line with the ongoing sustainable transformation of the Danish energy sector.

Grontmij has been commissioned for the total project management, health and safety issues and the design of all mechanical and electrical installations. For the new facility this involves the design of a boiler unit, flue gas cleaning and condensing systems, fuel management systems and supporting equipment. In the existing plant, the steam turbine will be prepared to run on steam from both the existing and the new plant. The entire facility will have a capacity of 70 MW fuel, which corresponds to the annual electricity and heat consumption of over 15,000 households.

John Chubb, Country Managing Director Grontmij Denmark: ‘Denmark is pushing for a conversion of the energy sector and Grontmij is fully engaged in several land mark projects. In the conversion of Helsingør power plant we enjoy a very collaborative relation to the client who also benefit from the leading energy competencies delivered by our strong team of Danish and Swedish Grontmij energy experts. The same team is currently also working for DONG Energy with the conversion of the Skaerbaek power plant to natural wood chips and for our client HOFOR we are involved in the BIO 4 HOFOR project.’
