Launch of Collaboration Between Mexico and Denmark

19 September 2017

The Danish-Mexican energy and climate collaboration that runs from mid-2017 until mid-2020, with a budget of EUR 4.6 million, is currently being jump-started in Mexico City. The work programme has been planned at workshops with the Mexican partners, and both the Mexican Energy Ministry (SENER) and Commission for Energy Efficiency (CONUEE) demonstrated huge commitment and excitement for the project.

The collaboration with SENER will focus on sustainable use of bioenergy as an energy source and improving and refining the modelling tools that exist in Mexico and which constitute a basis for creating better scenarios for use in long-term planning. Finally, it will look at supporting the renovation of the electricity network in order to enable it to manage more sustainable energy. The collaboration with CONUEE will focus on supporting the preparation of a system to expand energy management in the industrial sector, and to incorporate energy efficiency into the guidelines for new construction work. In addition, there will be collaboration to incorporate energy efficiency into Mexico’s modelling work.

The collaboration will furthermore help to identify – and to implement – initiatives that can help Mexico achieve their CO2 reduction target.

Danish experiences at the energy conference in Mexico
The Danish Energy Agency and the Ministry for Energy, Utilities and Climate participated in the energy conference DEMEX – Dialogues for the Future of Energy to share experiences from the Danish-Mexican collaboration, and also to meet other international and Mexican partners. During the conference, the Mexican hosts several times emphasised the collaboration with Denmark as something that has been a great inspiration and help for Mexico. Thus, it is with a great deal of support and attention that the programme for 2017-20 begins.

The Danish Energy Agency organised a side event on bioenergy, as well as a workshop on modeling and scenarios. The Danish contribution has partly consisted of sharing Danish experiences, and partly of sharing experiences from the collaboration with Mexico in 2014-17.

At the side event on scenarios and modelling, various models for the Mexican energy sector were presented over the course of more than 5 hours. This drew a lot of attention as it provides an opportunity to improve planning in the energy sector in the long term, and more than 70 participants showed up and took part in the discussions.

The side event on bioenergy focused on opportunities and challenges associated with an increase in the use of bioenergy in Mexico. The Danish Energy Agency presented the Danish experiences, as well as experiences gathered from the collaboration with Mexico. Furthermore, assessments of potentials and possible technologies were presented by the Danish Energy Agency, the Mexican university UNAM, and by SENER. More than 50 participants took part in this side event.
