Chinese Mayors Inspired by the Danish Green Transition

More than ever, China is committed to the green transition. No other country in the world invests more in green solutions. Especially Chinese cities and local departments take the lead in the green transition, largely inspired by Denmark.

These days, a group of mayors and senior officials from the populous Guangdong Province attend a two-week training program in Denmark to learn how their colleagues in Danish municipalities have successfully managed to implement the green transition.

The program - Chinese Mayor Training Program - focuses on sustainable urban development, renewable energy and water solutions, and is organised by China Association of Mayors, the Chinese Development Research Foundation (CDRF), Grundfos China, DTU and Denmark's Green Branding Organisation of State of Green.

Prior to the visit in Denmark, the participants have gone through a week-long program in Beijing, organised by China Association of Mayors. In Denmark, they will receive training and participate in seminars at the Techinical University of Denmark in Lyngby about for example LED lighting, indoor climate, protection of water resources and urban energy systems during the first week. In week 2, participants will meet Danish municipal top people and discuss energy, environmental policy and topics such as water supply, wastewater treatment, sustainable transportation and renewable energy. Visiting companies and experiencing solutions is part of the program, and they will be presented to advanced solutions across the country, amongst others in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Viborg and Bjerringbro.

-There is a very big political will in China to invest in green solutions, and the training program is very valuable to local decision-makers, who gain a thorough insight into the mindset and decision-making processes in Denmark. For a Danish company like Grundfos, the program provides good and concrete contacts to important Chinese regions and cities, says Communications Director Kim Nøhr Skibsted, Grundfos.

The two-week process is the latest in the series of training programs for Chinese top officials. During the last two years, more than 30 mayors, deputy mayors and top officials from both Guangdong and Henan Province have completed the program. Thus, they have gained a deep insight into how Danish solutions can better support the process of the green transition in their respective regions, and the program is estimated to have high economic value and to strengthen the way in which processes are managed locally.

This year, around 40 mayors will participate in the program in Denmark. The visit from Guangdong will be followed up with a program in September, where mayors from Henan Province will undertake the training program.

Both Guangdong and Henan are provinces with more than 100 million inhabitants. Guangdong, located in Hong Kong, is an economic center in southern China, while Henan is a driver of the economy in the central part of the country. Both provinces focus on green solutions and plan for massive investments in green solutions.
