Since 1999 Solrød Municipality has aimed at creating an environmentally sustainable development. Thus, the municipal Climate Action Plan from 2009 puts up some of the most ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions as the aim is to reduce the municipal greenhouse gas emissions by 55% in 2025.

One of the major initiatives in the climate action plan is the construction of a biogas plant producing CO2 neutral energy based on local biomass resources. Since its realisation in 2015, the biogas plant has ensured a greenhouse gas reduction of approx. 45,000 tons of CO2 annually.
