In the summer of 2008, the Lillgrund offshore wind farm in Øresund near Malmö in Sweden was inaugurated. The 48 2.3 MW wind turbines delivered by Siemens Wind Power were ordered by Vattenfall AB, which now owns two of the three largest offshore wind farms in the world, and thus mark an important step in the Swedish energy company’s efforts to promote wind power in the Nordic countries. The project’s installed capacity of 110 MW has the potential to meet the electricity needs of approximately 60,000 Swedish households.

Besides turbine delivery, the Siemens scope of this project includes the electrical infrastructure, and the equipment for the project’s 33kV and 138 kV offshore transformer station will be delivered by Siemens Power Transmission & Distribution. With the installation of the 48 2.3 MW wind turbines comes also a five-year service and maintenance agreement. This offshore project is located in the Baltic Sea at a water depth of 4 – 13 meters and a 6 – 7 kilometer distance to the shore.
