Making the steam supply match the steam demand at Chr. Hansen’s production site in Copenhagen was the challenge. Ramboll proposed two mega storage tanks. Copenhagen, 13 March 2017

Denmark’s largest industrial steam accumulator tanks are commissioned at Chr. Hansen’s production site in Copenhagen today. The two 170 m3 tanks store the steam from the two 12 bar boilers at the site, which is used in the production of natural ingredients for the food, nutritional and pharmaceutical industries.

- “When the production facilities are extended, there will be a mismatch between the amount of steam generated by the boilers and the amount of steam required by the production. The two mega tanks will level out the difference,” says project manager Hlynur Hrafn Thorkelsson, Ramboll Energy.

Innovative solution

Ramboll was commissioned by Chr. Hansen to analyse the steam generation at the site and propose solutions for how to make more steam readily available for the production.

- “The boilers cannot respond quickly enough to peak demands from the production as it takes time to increase the steam generation,” says Hlynur Hrafn Thorkelsson.

Therefore Ramboll proposed to install two big steam accumulator tanks, which store the excess steam for use when required by the production. Ramboll was responsible for the conceptual design of the accumulator tank solution and the subsequent procurement, installation supervision and commissioning.

Bosch was the supplier that submitted the winning bid. - “The tanks are the largest steam accumulator tanks we have ever produced and the first of their kind in Denmark,” says Sales and Project Manager Martin Lambrecht from Bosch TT Denmark.

- “Installing accumulators instead of additional boilers gives us a better return on our investment and ensures a better performance in times of peak consumption,” says Tom Krantz, Project Manager at Chr. Hansen.

Since the tanks were installed in August, they have been filled with steam and hot condensate, and the valve systems have been tested to make them ready for commissioning. The production site has been in full operation during the installation of the tanks.
