Kafubu Water and Sewerage Company (KWSC) supplies drinking water to the cities Ndola, Luanshya, and Masaiti in the Copperbelt province servicing a total population of 500,000 people. KWSC suffers from a poorly maintained network with NRW-levels above 50 %. The water supply is characterised by a progressive state of physical deterioration and the maintenance teams are struggling just to prevent a further increase in NRW.

NIRAS is the consultant on a major improvement project that includes extensive rehabilitation of the pipeline network and production plants as well as improving the capacity and skills of the leakage units.

A strategy has been applied with the priority of reducing NRW to an acceptable level and with a focus on asset management in order to secure the sustainability of the investments. The strategy has been applied and verified using hydraulic modelling and strategic rehabilitation planning tools supplied by NIRAS, as well as a series of capacity building initiatives to strengthen the capabilities of the existing leakage teams.

The rehabilitation works are successfully in progress from 2015 and based on achieved result it is expected to reduce the NRW-level to 20-30 per cent within 2-3 years.
