The Award was given to Kolding Municipality for the purchase of eco-friendly hydrogen vehicles, and the establishment of partnerships in implementing both the vehicles and a hydrogen filling station within the municipality.
Four public and private actors were nominated for the Green Purchasing Award 2015, which was presented on 05.11.2015
Besides Kolding Municipality’s nomination, Roskilde Festival was nominated for the festival’s ecological transition, Lyreco was nominated as they help their customers to choose sustainable alternatives, and Copenhagen Municipality together with Break & Sons were nominated for incorporating sustainability in moving services.
The four nominees were chosen among a wide range of strong applications by the jury that consisted of members from the Forum for Sustainable Procurement Steering Group, which is the initiator of the Award. Afterwards, over a thousand procurement interested voted for one of the four nominees at the Forum for Sustainable Procurement’s website, where Kolding Municipality received the most votes and thereby won the Award.
Kolding already has electric cars, and the purchase of hydrogen vehicles is therefore seen (at this moment) as a supplement, since they have a greater range and can be refueled in minutes. For Kolding Municipality, it is not just about solving their own transport needs, but also to create a foundation that enables citizens to use cars that are driven by sustainable energy in the future.
Not just ideals underlie this decision. In the long run, it provides a significant savings in terms of money. Kolding’s geographical location also provides an optimal strategic location, which means that Denmark will be the first country in the world with a nationwide network of hydrogen filling stations.
