Radius and Kamstrup begins roll-out of large-scale smart metering project

By the end of 2019, in time to comply with local regulations, one million Danish homes in the Copenhagen area will have a remotely read electricity meter installed. The first new meter was installed in December 2016 as part of a pilot project comprising about 16,000 households, and now the mass roll-out has begun. In cooperation with Kamstrup, Radius (a part of the DONG Energy Group) will visit up to 2,000 homes a day to install the new meters.

Since Kamstrup took home the order in the spring of 2015, days and months have been spent on clarifying and defining processes and set-ups, outlining the IT architecture and of course planning and documenting it all. The culmination came with in a successful pilot in the spring of 2017. And according to Søren Rønnebech, Project Manager at Radius, the results from the pilot are very positive. “Kamstrup is fully aware that due to the size of this project, it calls for an organisation of people who really know how to handle the tasks and the challenges that arise along the way. We have found the collaboration to be positive, dynamic and in constant development – and it still is.”

The sheer scale of the project makes it unique in a Scandinavian context. “In many ways this project is a milestone for us. With its one million meters, it’s our single biggest project and it has fuelled both a lot of organisational learning and the development of new, customized solutions - in a very short time”, says Henrik Mørck Mogensen, Senior Vice President at Kamstrup.

The turnkey project is based on Kamstrup’s Smart Grid platform OMNIA and includes one million smart electricity meters and remote reading system, integration to various other systems, project management, installation of meters and infrastructure, consumer support and full system operation until 2034.
