Flex-parking is a solution allowing cars and bicycles to share the same space.

HOE360 Consulting has developed the concept for dynamic use of road space and conducted the testing in its pilot phase and its evaluation.

The concept allows the same space to be used both for parking of bicycles and cars at different times of the day. The concept was developed and thereafter tested in 1:1 in front of a school. After a one year test phase and subsequently an evaluation, the Flex-Parking concept had proved its worth.

How it works

Often there is not the same demand for parking at various times a day, that goes for both cars and bicycles. So instead of allocating an area to either car - or bicycle parking, this concepts divides the purpose of the area in two times zones. So from 7 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon its parking for bicycles and between 5 in the afternoon and 7 in the morning its car parking. It is very simple and the transition between the two modes are signed posted (see icon in profile picture).

The exact curfew times were selected based on observation on travel behaviour where both cyclists and car drivers determine the correct time for change between the two.

The test phase proved the concept is functional and there were no observed issues or problems related to changing between car and bicycles and therefore Flex Parking can now be deployed as part of the parking solutions municipalities can offer and has now been implemented at a second School in Copenhagen.
