Innovation drivers to push wind technology development

When a company – whether big or small – embarks on new technology development projects in wind energy, there are five central questions that must be asked to ensure that the project is driving forward the industry and supporting viable technology development. That is the clear message in a coming report from Megavind, Denmark’s national innovation platform for wind energy, which is due in October.

Megavind has identified five innovation drivers that can be used as indicators for the viability of technology development in both individual companies as well as the industry as a whole. Use them to test the impact of your technology projects, help you asses their viability and prioritize your efforts.

The five innovation drivers are:

  • Increase performance and efficiency
  • Decrease technical and financial risks
  • Increase system value of wind power
  • Shorten time to market
  • Address environmental and regulatory market barriers

By adding the question "Does my project….?" to each of the bullets above, you are left with the exact 5 questions to consider in the initial project phase. The message is clear: If you can’t answer ’yes’ to at least one of the bullets above, then maybe you should consider abandoning your idea, as it doesn’t support and push innovation in the five key areas.

The five innovation drives should not be used as a mindless check list where everything needs to fit perfectly into a scheme, but rather as an assessment tool for both industry and research community to help take an honest look at their innovation projects, test viability and relevance to the entire wind sector, and thereby create a stronger market profile.

What we benefit from with using these innovation drivers, is a shared frame of reference when assessing innovation projects – something that is crucial for the industry and its ability to continue moving forward and pushing new technology breakthroughs. It is my hope that we across both industry and research seize this opportunity to align our assessment of innovation projects and dare to challenge each other on which innovation projects to prioritize for the sake of creating an even stronger, even more viable, and more aligned technology development in Denmark.

On 30-31 October, Danish Wind Industry Association and Danish Research Consortium for Wind Energy once again gather around 400 industry experts from Denmark and abroad for WIND ENERGY DENMARK 2018. As the event focuses on wind technology development, we will of course be taking our own medicine and use the innovation drivers as key indicators for the conference sessions and debates. In this way, we ensure that the new ideas and discussions and filtered for relevance and viability and that they support our common goal: to drive forward the wind industry in a time where focus is both on cost of energy and value of wind.

You are more than welcome to take part in the debates at WIND ENERGY DENMARK - I hope to see you there!
