Danfoss Close to Cutting its CO2 Emissions in Half

Since ProjectZero was established ten years ago, Danfoss has reduced their CO2 emissions from the facilities in Nordborg and Gråsten by 26,000 tonnes. Danfoss is thus one-step closer to its climate target for 2030; cutting the energy consumption per Danish turnover crown in half as well as cutting the CO2 emission in its utilised energy in half.

The reduction in CO2 places Danfoss in the lead for ProjectZero, which has managed to bring the region of Sønderborg’s emissions down by 35 percent since 2007.

Flemming Lynge Nielsen, the Sustainability Manager at Danfoss, explains that the company has been a part of ProjectZero since its very beginning and that they will remain a part of the project:

- Up to and including 2020, we will have significant focus on reducing the amount of energy we use. We will do this by doing what we are specialised in doing, which is making more with increasingly less. From 2020, we will also direct our focus at reducing CO2 emissions originated from our energy consumption. Purchases of green energy could be one of the means to reach this goal. We wish to accomplish our part of the task by fulfilling the vision of ProjectZero.

The Managing Director of ProjectZero, Peter Rathje is delighted by the results and commitment from Danfoss:

- It is crucial to the implementation of ProjectZero’s vision that Danfoss plays an active role and inspires other companies.

A significant cause of Danfoss’ achievement to reduce CO2 emissions at Gråsten is the transition from natural gas to green district heating. The facilities at Nordborg are also expected to shift to green district heating.

The headquarters in Nordborg have already delivered strong results by decreasing their energy consumption and, thus, their CO2 emissions.

In four years, the CO2 emissions from the industrial park in Ballerup has been cut in half and an additional DKK 25 million has been saved on heating costs. This has been done by focusing on energy efficiency and the transition to green surplus heat. Recovering heat from the factories has meant that almost 20 percent of the heat consumption at Danfoss in Nordborg is now covered by surplus heat.

Moreover, the strong results seem reoccurring. During the first quarter of 2017, the heat consumption at Danfoss in Nordborg and Gråsten dropped by 18 percent compared with the same quarter the previous year.

Danfoss’ climate strategy

In 2015, Danfoss launched its global “Danfoss Climate Strategy 2030”. With the strategy, Danfoss hopes to reduce the concern’s energy intensity and CO2 intensity with 50 percent before 2020. This will happen through global energy savings projects, behavioural changes, and green energy sources. Over the coming years, the existing projects will cut 30 percent of the energy consumption at Danfoss’ 27 biggest factories worldwide.

On a global scale, Danfoss has managed to cut its total energy consumption while simultaneously increasing its revenue in 2016. Today, Danfoss uses 40 percent less energy for each Danish turnover krone compared to 2007.

Outside of the headquarters in Nordborg, Danfoss has also established a solar park, which produces 2 MW or what is equivalent to the annual consumption of 400 single-family houses.
