In Beijing, on behalf of Sønderborg and Project Zero, the President of ProjectZero Peter Rathje has signed one of ten EU/China city cooperation agreements. Danish Minister Carsten Hansen took part in the EU/China urbanization conference and pointed out Sonderborg's climate activities. The agreement will open the oor to the export of technologies and consultancy from Southern Denmark to China.

According to a press release from the Danish Ministry of Housing, Urban and Rural Affairs, Sønderborg has an important place on the political stage in China. Ten EU/China agreements were signed at the conference - of which one was between Haiyan and Sønderborg, and was the only Danish one.

With the support of Danfoss, cooperation with Haiyan began in May this year when politicians and public officials from Haiyan visited Sønderborg to gather inspiration for ambitious incorporation of climate-friendly solutions in city developments of the future. Haiyan will, among other things, create a "Denmark Zero Carbon Street" with buildings covering approx. 75,000 square meters, equipped with the best of Danish green technologies. This is one of the areas in which technology and consultancy will be supplied. The area is the size of that of the master plan for the Gehry harbor in Sønderborg.

”I am very proud and happy that someone outside Denmark has discovered us and credits us for the climate spearhead we are. It is a big thing that we now have a place on the podium at a conference of this caliber.China makes up a huge market, and when they take an active part in solving the CO2 challenge with respect to the environment, that is when we should take action. That was our target when we travelled to China last year together with a delegation from Sønderborg, and I hope that our companies will use the opportunity to export consultancy and technologies – because that’s what it is all about: to create growth and jobs here in our city,” says former Mayor Aase Nyegaard, who was unable to take part in the EU/China urbanization conference due to the Danish regional election.

ProjectZero and the fact that Haiyan was already in close contact with the Sønderborg area, thanks to its cooperation with Danfoss, were the reasons that Haiyan took an early interest in Sønderborg. Danfoss recently extended its presence with two new factories in Haiyan which has about 500,000 residents.
