Domen is a transparent, dome-shaped greenhouse in the harbor area of Aarhus. In its inside, you will find a two-story wooden house surrounded by fragrant trees and plants. It is a landmark for sustainability and community.

Domen is – together with a handful of other places in Aarhus – a united city life house. The purpose of Domen is to create a space for experimenting with alternative and sustainable building constructions as well as an inspiring environment for debates, business seminars, art, people’s kitchens, and much more. Citizens and associations can book Domen free of charge for events evolving around the topics of sustainability and community.

Domen has been located at Pier 2 in Aarhus since the summer of 2016. The Municipality of Aarhus took over operation of Domen in 2018 in order to provide an informal and inspiring location for both citizen-citizen and citizen-municipality collaboration. Being an entrance to the professionals in the city, Domen frames discussions on the development of Aarhus as a sustainable city. Currently, Domen is open every day between 10.00 – 20.00, there is a café and many opportunities to work or relax.

As Domen in its current form is the third of its kind, many learnings regarding sustainability and usage of Domen could be implemented in this version: The waste of materials could be reduced, and Domen’s interior climate is improved due to better isolation in winter and easier ventilation during summer. Still, temperature and air quality in Domen are significantly determined by the weather outside.

Furthermore, the majority of Domen’s interior is reused from previous versions.

  • Domen is 10,5 meters in height, has a diameter of 24 meters, adding up to 450 m2 all-in-all.
  • Capacity: approx. 150 seats
  • It takes approximately 14 days to get the Dome on its feet and the same time to disassemble it.
  • App. 100 cubic meters of solid wood were used for the construction, which stores 80 tons of CO2.
  • A similar building in concrete would have emitted 20 tons of CO2.
