District heating in the City of Aarhus

AffaldVarme Aarhus (Department of Waste and District Heating) is a municipal, contract managed company. Its most important job is to supply and develop safe, environmentally correct, climate friendly and competitive waste management and district heating to customers in the City of Aarhus.

AffaldVarme Aarhus is assisting the city in becoming CO2-neutral by 2030. For instance by granting subsidies for energy optimisation of private buildings: re-insulation, replacement of energy heavy domestic appliances or improvements of private heating facilities. Also, the company provides information and guidance to customers on how to make district heating in the home perform with the best possible outcome – both financially and environmentally.

More information

District heating was introduced in the centre of Aarhus in 1928 and has grown ever since. Today suburbs and villages are supplied as well. Part of the present system is seven cooperatively owned district heating companies. Totally 95 % of the heat market in the municipality with 315,000 inhabitants is covered. Outside the municipality another four cooperatives serve four towns.

The large share of combined heat and power (96%) enables the exploitation of heat which would otherwise have been cooled off to the environment. In addition, waste and biomass are used to an increasing extent. Therefore, the consumption of fossil fuels relating to heat production is limited to about 1,094 GWh. If the district heating customers had had their own oil or gas boilers instead, the use of fossil fuels and the emission of CO2 would have been about twice as much – a little more with oil burners, and a little less with natural gas burners. The CO2 emission of 2011 is 413,540 tonnes.
