Renewable Energy for Emission Reduction (REFER)

The project provides its partners with solid knowledge and information when investing in district heating solutions based on renewable energy sources or energy efficiency solutions.

The replacement of fossil fuels by renewable energy sources is high on the political agenda. In Central Denmark Region, it is our goal that 50% of the energy consumption is covered by renewable energy sources by 2025.

An important means to achieve this goal, is the green transition of the district heating supply. In our part of Denmark, district heating accounts for 65% of the energy consumption used for the heating of buildings. A green transition of district heating will bring us closer to meeting our climate goal. Moreover, more heat and more electricity will be based on renewable energy sources reducing the emission of CO2.

With DKK 21.5 millions from the EU, Central Denmark Region protects district heating customers against booming prices, while simultaneously accelerating the green transition.

The project ensures counseling of the 24 partners, in the project, providing them with solid knowledge and information when investing in district heating solutions based on renewable energy sources or energy efficiency solutions.

The heating plants expect to invest DKK 543.7 millions in new energy efficient technology towards 2020.

Apart from district heating plants learning from each other in the project, it is also a goal to spread knowledge and experiences and make district heating in Central Denmark Region can be exemplary of the green transition.

Thus, the REFER project can benefit the climate, the local district heating systems and economy of the consumers.

Last, but not least, the REFER project will have a positive impact on the industry in the region by maintaining companies’ leading position within green technology with 18,700 full-time jobs and an export of green technology of DKK 40 billion, which is equal to more than half of the total Danish green export.
