The methanol fuel cell system

Worldwide, the climate is changing mainly due to too much CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. At the same time, 91% of the world’s population lives in places where air pollution exceeds WHO guideline limits resulting in 4.2 million premature deaths each year.

We need to stop using fossil fuels extracted from underground and ensure zero harmful emissions in the transportation sector as it is responsible for a large proportion of air pollution, especially in densely populated areas with heavy traffic.

Methanol fuel cell systems

Blue World Technologies designs, develops and manufactures methanol fuel cell systems primarily for automotive and mobility applications. The methanol fuel cell system has zero harmful emissions and a low overall well-to-wheel CO2 emission level providing a solution to the worldwide problems with air pollution and climate change.

With decades of experience in the industry, the focus of Blue World Technologies is on developing an advanced technology portfolio ranging from core materials through the stack and reformer design to the final reformed methanol fuel cell system.

Blue World Technologies is covering the entire value chain to enable optimized performance and cost-effectiveness of components and systems. This ensures a seamless scale-up of production and product delivery.

The system

Blue World Technologies’ methanol fuel cells are combined with batteries in hybrid configurations. The complete system includes methanol reformer for fuel conversion, DC/DC for power conversion and fuel cell stack for power production. The fuel cell control unit governs the fuel cell system as well as communicates with the vehicle.

The methanol fuel cell system is based on High-Temperature PEM technology and methanol to hydrogen reforming.


The Blue World Technologies fuel cell system is fuelled by methanol which is simple and cost-effective. Methanol also enables existing infrastructure and logistics systems to be reused during methanol storage, transportation and distribution. Renewable methanol can be made from many feedstocks such as electricity, biomass, biogas, and municipal waste.

Drivetrain solutions

Blue World Technologies’ methanol fuel cell systems are applied in a plug-in battery hybrid configuration to balance the need for power and range.

Typical specifications

  • 15 – 25 kWh battery pack
  • 10 – 20 kW methanol fuel cell system
  • 50 – 80 L liquid tank

This enables approximately 3-minute refuelling time with more than 1,000 km range.

The Blue World Technologies methanol fuel cell system has a variety of application ranging from passenger cars to small trucks and buses.
