The shift from a conventional wastewater treatment plant towards a resource recovery facility has become a priority focus in Denmark. Consequently, BIOFOS is now in the transfer process towards optimising resources from waste without compromising the environment.

BIOFOS is the largest wastewater utility in Denmark serving a population of 1.2 million. Presently BIOFOS is producing 150 Mwh for every 100 MWh consumed.

A lighthouse project called VARGA (Water Resource Recovery Facility) is further paving the way to more energy production, phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge ashes and reduction of greenhouse gasses. As part of the project, a Life Cycle Assessment and an eco-efficiency analysis has been conducted to assess the Total Added Value of implementing the VARGA concept compared to business as usual. The VARGA project is in fully compliance with BIOFOS´ strategy 2020-2025.

This strategy fully integrates seven of the UN Sustainable Development Goals with SDG’: 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 17.
