Jan 2012 The inside story on the new copper brazed heat exchanger Models in the new generation of copper brazed heat exchangers from heat transfer technology leader Alfa Laval may look very similar to the existing units, but inside it’s a completely different story. Innovative design improvements have given the new models much higher performance in terms of thermal efficiency, resulting in energy and cost savings for customers. hvacDesignated CB30, CB60, CB110 and CB112, the new models are designed to cover a wide range of duties and will replace the CB27, CB52, CB76/77 and AC120 models.

The inside story

In the new CB generation, a smaller unit can be installed to handle the same task, thus saving space. Alfa Laval has achieved this by increasing the heat transfer area within the same dimensions. The result is the same performance capacity in a heat exchanger with a smaller footprint.

Thermal efficiency is substantially higher due to an optimized plate pattern and the introduction of asymmetrical plate channels that generate even more turbulence (symmetrical versions are also available). Energy consumption is lower since the new design also includes flow around the port, which results in less pressure drop.

Less environmental impact

In the new copper brazed models material usage has been optimized, resulting in fewer plates. This translates to less material for the same duty and improved energy utilization, which benefits the environment.

Same interface, easy to upgrade

The new generation is highly flexible with a number of configurations and capacities to choose from, including both asymmetrical and symmetrical plate patterns. This enables the installer to choose the optimum model for the duty. Since the new CB30, CB60, CB110 and CB112 models have the same connections and interface as the previous models – customers wishing to upgrade to the new generation do not need to invest in redesigning their systems. The fact that there are no sharp edges on the new models contributes to user safety.
