Development of sustainable energy systems.

The oil that we extract from the earth today has been created over millions of years. However, it is possible to speed up the process of turning organic material into crude oil by means of a hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) process. HTL is one of several technologies that Aarhus University will now be gathering in a new Programme for Biorefining.

The programme will provide new opportunities for experimenting with biorefining technologies, including technologies that transform biomass to bio-oil.

The new programme will primarily work with climate and environmentally friendly biomass such as grasses and other perennial crops. One of the challenges is to create possibilities for separating such biomasses into fractions that can be used as feed and bio-based raw materials for the chemical industry as well as energy.
